If a study were to be conducted among the average person what they thought would be the best way to get a six pack, their answer would most likely be unanimous or close to it. They would tell you that crunches are the key to gaining a six pack.
While this does help it is not the only part of the abdominal muscle equation.
Crunches will build the muscles in the center abdominals but leave out the others. So it wouldn’t be able to form the complete “six pack” form on the stomach area.
So what is the remaining part of the equation that most people miss and what can be done?
1. The complete muscle package requires more than several crunch exercises.
It is important to stress this point. No matter how many crunches are done and no matter how many ways they are done, it will still not get you a six pack. While the exercise is very good for you all the ab exercises, DVD ab programs or abdominal classes will not get you to your goal.
Crunches will not remove fat on your stomach. Stomach fat, like the fat in the rest of your body needs to be eliminated with exercising the right way and raising the function of your metabolism.
Trying to lose fat in just one area is just not possible. “Spot reduction” is what that is referred to and is an old myth that the underlying muscle can remove the fat over it.
If this was a possibility, then a lot more people would be able to achieve a smooth stomach or a six pack by simply doing crunches like many people think will cause a ripped stomach. Obviously it does not work that way since many people are still searching for a way to get a six pack. If you take notice, the individuals that you see with a beautiful stomach also have the rest of their body in amazing shape. The program they followed is the program you should follow and this means eating right and exercising correctly.
2. The base to great abdominal muscles is nutrition.
This is such an important part in reaching great abdominals and it is most often not recognized.
Very minimal body fat percentage is needed for any kind of muscle to show in the stomach area. The right diet is the only way to get a very low body fat percentage.
In regards to your nutritional requirements you will need to do the following:
“High glycemic” carbohydrates will need to be avoided and this includes fast foods, sodas, junk foods and sugary foods among others.
The body increases production of insulin as a response the the spike in blood sugar that is the result of these foods. When the insulin increases it stores these unhealthy foods as fat.
Eat frequent meals through the day.
Optimally, eating should take place four to six times through the day and this is good for your body in a number of ways. One way that eating more often with smaller portions is good for you is that you will not get hungry as much as with larger meals spaced further apart. Keeping hunger to a minimum will also prevent you from eating too much when it is time to eat. Eating smaller more frequent meals does not make your blood sugar spike as it does after eating a large meal. Blood sugar is also regulated by what you are eating and if it is healthy items such as proteins, healthy fats and foods with low carbohydrates.
Total daily calories should be less.
This is an obvious when training for solid muscle mass on the stomach. What your total current calorie intake is for the day, your new calorie total must be lower for losing that last little bit of fat.
Losing the body fat is a real important key to success abdominals. A carefully planned out dietary meal plan combined with the correct forms of exercise is the best manner to lose the fat. Frustration will be the only result of crash diets and doing only crunches for exercise.
If these key elements are adapted into your lifestyle along with work and perseverance, then you too will have a great looking stomach with definition.
